The daily summer thunderstorms are here, along with the occassional tropical depression and with that comes preparing for Hurricanes season too.
Hurricane season in Florida demands preparedness, and your air conditioning system is no exception. Taking proactive steps can prevent costly damage and ensure your AC operates efficiently after the storm.
Your compressor unit should be securly anchored to a cement pad. Locate the brackets on the bottom of your compressor unit and ensure they have not rusted or have become loose. If they have get them repaired and secured as quickly as possible. Make sure to clear any over grown bushes, shrubs or flowerbed vegetation away from the condenser unit.
During intense thunderstorms, tropical depressions or hurricanes, it is generally advised to turn your AC system off at the breaker. While rain alone won't harm the unit, lightning strikes and power surges during these storms can cause significant damage to the AC's electrical components.

Before diving into more complex issues, start with these simple checks:
Thermostat Setting: Ensure your thermostat is set to 'Cool' and the desired temperature is lower than the current room temperature. Check the fan setting; it should be on 'Auto' for the most efficient cooling.
Power Supply: Verify that the AC unit is receiving power. Check the circuit breaker or fuse box for any tripped breakers or blown fuses related to the AC.
Air Filter Inspect the air filter for dirt and debris. Replace if necessary. A clogged filter restricts airflow and can cause the AC to work harder and cool less effectively.
Blocked Vents Ensure that air vents are not blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Blocked vents restrict airflow, reducing cooling in certain areas.
Outside Unit Check the outside AC unit for any obstructions, such as plants or debris. Make sure the fan is running and that the unit is clean.
Refrigerant Levels Low refrigerant levels can significantly reduce cooling performance. Look for signs of leaks, such as ice buildup on the refrigerant lines. This is a job for a professional.
